Hey there, everyone. This article just went up today over at Gamasutra—an interview with some of the high-rollers at Arc, including Toshimichi Mori, the director of everyone’s favorite new fighter, BlazBlue.
Toshimichi Mori: We want our arcade games to provide quick bursts of enjoyment, and then when the same game goes to a console, the goal becomes creating a play experience the user can really sink their teeth into. People don’t just beat a fighting game once at home, they play through it numerous times, so we add things like a story mode to flesh out back story for each of the characters, things that will expand the game world.
So head over to Gamasutra and check it out.

All this talk of netplay and no mention of GGPO. It is your god-given duty to tell them about it, because seriously, it opens up so many possibilities.

That was interesting. But I feel somewhat bummed that they don’t think they can make a quality console fighter with good online.

It’s not that they cant make an online option, they are telling you to not take the online part of any fighting game too serious cause theres always 1-12 frames of lag, which prevents proper timing for long combos and precision. ST2HD seems ok with online cause the mechanics are so simple that it doesnt matter ( although some matches you will see your opponent teleporting and grabbing you or hitting you)

Fascinating article. A lot of interesting stuff in there regarding the various designers’ philosophies toward games and the people who play them. Some pretty juicy little tidbits of info in there, too. I had to laugh when Ishiwatari said he thought SoulCalibur was “junk”, since I’ve personally been becoming increasingly frustrated with several aspects of that series for some time now. I agree with his opinions about SFIII’s frustratingly steep learning curve as well.
This interview really reaffirmed my view that these guys (and gals) are all pros in the industry who really know fighting games, and even more importantly, know the communities based around playing fighting games. I think I want to play BlazBlue even more now, if that’s possible.
