I remember doing this with the original Castlevania as a kid… The first time I got to Dracula, I thought I beat him and I was like WOOHOO! I then spiked my controller and started to do the football endzone dance. Unbeknownst to me at the time he had a second form. All I could do is watch in horror as he proceeds to stomp me into oblivion. I’m still traumatized to this day.

Same thing happened to me when I *thought I finished* the Extra Stage in Touhou 8 with no deaths/bombs… I didn’t see the last spell card pop and while I was celebrating by spamming on IRC and dancing thinking that I beat it… I think took another week before I actually finished it like that. T’was a very sad day.

Unfortunately…This also happened to me during SF4 play session, after a very difficult match. Thankfully. I was in the sanctity of my home. away from the eyes of the public.
