It has come to our attention that a number of customers who have pre-ordered Zero Escape: Virtue’s Last Reward in hopes of getting the pre-order bonus have received an email from Amazon regarding a complication with their order. Unfortunately, it appears that the contents of the email have told customers that they will not be able to receive the pre-order bonus along with their purchase.

When we began our pre-order bonus promotion, our understanding was that all pre-orders placed before the promotional date would be honored by the system and allow customers to receive the bonus without any additional involvement from either party. However, we were just informed today that technical difficulties arose in the implementation of this conversion, preventing certain customers from getting the pre-order bonus. We sincerely regret and feel for our amazing fans (you) who have waited patiently for this bonus item.

Amazon will be handling any logistics involving orders placed at Amazon and the pre-order bonus item. While we would like to do everything we can to ensure that our fans are able to obtain their favorite games and products without any complications, our involvement in the final delivery of products is limited.

If you have any further questions, please contact an Amazon customer service representative.

I did speak with an Amazon customer service representative, and was told there was nothing they could do, they are doing absolutely no handling. I’m disappointed in both Aksys and Amazon in this matter.

My initial order was confirmed by Aksys that I would receive the watch with my preorder, which made me pass on the second batch under false pretenses. Now I get this email from amazon just days before the release? As a long time fan and a cosplayer who really wanted this watch, I’m truly heartbroken. What perhaps disappoints me the most is neither party seems to be going out of their way to doing something about this, only apologizing that there’s limited supply.

Its good to know how much the loyalty of fans who ordered all the way back in March is appreciated. Way to go to bat for those guys, Aksys.

I just finished talking to Amazon. They have NO knowledge of the situation, and it’s against their policy to do anything else but offer the link for the bonus bundle, WHICH IS UNAVAILABLE.

You are telling your customers, who had the confidence in your company to place an advance order to talk to another party that has NO interest in helping whatsoever. This is not professional, as a company just shrugging off your customer’s concerns is not a way to conduct business.

Me:Order not upgraded to bonus bundle.
PavanVasu:Hello, my name is Pavan. I’ll be happy to help you today.
    Me:Hello Pavan.
I would like to ask about this situation:
PavanVasu:Can you help me out with your order# please?
    Me:Yes. Just a moment.
    Order #105-7777020-1530610
The game publisher is attributing the problem to Amazon.

PavanVasu:Are you referring to the e-mail saying you won’t receive the bonus edition
Me:Yes. If this was a technical problem on Amazon’s end I want to know how can the issue be resolved. Please look at the link I attached.
PavanVasu:I apologize for what happened. It was due to limited availability of the bonus edition.
If you wish I can cancel this order for you.
Me:There is no way to obtain the bonus edition, which I did not receive due to a technical issue from Amazon?
PavanVasu:I’m really sorry for any miscommunication Alvaro. It was due to limited availability of the bonus edition.
Me:The publisher says it is your responsibility.
Due to technical issues on your end.
There is no restitution for an expectation I was set, then.
PavanVasu:Alvaro, there were no technical issues. It is due to limited availability of the bonus edition.
Me:Thank you, then I will confront the publisher on this.

Ultimately, the worst thing about all of this is that its got nothing to do with what is doubtlessly going to be an awesome game, with a lot of love and care put into the localization effort. I feel bad that I’m mad about a pre-order bonus I didn’t even know I would be getting (or not) when I put my pre-order in last March. Its a shame that marketing, distribution, or whichever departments were involved in the promotional packaging of this game (as well as the responsible people at Amazon.com) dropped the ball and are letting such a trivial thing stain the anticipation of the game’s release.

I don’t blame Aksys. I blame Amazon. But I’m still upset. The correct way for Amazon to handle this was to short people who ordered later rather than short people who ordered earlier. The most recent orders for the “pre-order bonus” version should have been shifted to the earliest orders of the regular version (prior to the day the bonus was added) until the correct customers were taken care of.

    Amazon’s just being lazy.

I’m pretty bummed, but there’s not much that can be done.

To be honest… If you guys started selling a batch of watches at your store I’ll 100% forgive you guys. I don’t care about getting the watch free. I just want the watch :( even if it costs $15+.

For the time being I’m stalking the Amazon page for any restocks, but I’m not very hopeful.

Your idea of doing “everything we can” is creating a blog post placing the blame on Amazon and washing your hands of the issue? Like others have said, I initially placed my order in March on Amazon and was told by Aksys that my order qualified for the bonus and ignored multiple attempts to re-order the pre-order bonus edition. This is a little upsetting. I’ll probably just skip this game now out of principle and I love 999. What should have encompassed “everything we can” is manufacturing more bonus items and fulfilling orders that you (Aksys) assured. I’m not saying Amazon has no fault but only Aksys can make this right. This is especially maddening when Amazon says there is a potential for more stock on the bonus item which means there is potential for future items to get what a lot of us were promised.

Miscommunications happen. I understand that. Dealing with a huge retailer can be problematic. I understand that also. Yet, I feel that simply blaming Amazon and throwing your hands up in the air is the wrong solution. It’s poor customer service and it’s patronizing. Let me explain why.

You announced the bonus edition and very clearly stated, multiple times, that everyone who pre-ordered the game prior to the announcement would receive the bonus edition. You then announced two runs of the bonus edition, specifically telling people who pre-ordered earlier “DO NOT CANCEL AND REORDER. YOU WILL RECEIVE THE BONUS EDITION.” And we, your most loyal customers, the true fans, relied on your announcement to our detriment.

And then we’re told that, not only will we not receive the bonus edition, but that there is no recourse for us. You blame Amazon, and Amazon blames you (yes, I also engaged in a live chat). And worse still is that, from a business perspective, you’ve chosen not to do anything about it because there is nothing we can do. Every element exists for a meritorious “promissory estoppel” or “fraud” lawsuit, but you know you the watch and tin aren’t worth the $400+ it would take to get into court. We can cancel our pre-order or shut up.

Being true fans, not many of us will cancel either. It wouldn’t be fair to the Japanese team or to the legendary writer Kotaro Uchikoshi. They’ve done nothing wrong. But this will be the last game I buy from Aksys, and I feel I’m probably not the only one. You’ve put me in my place as the lowly consumer, and I feel seriously taken advantage of. I was planning on wearing the heck out of that watch and telling people how awesome the game and Aksys was. Now, I can show them my bare wrist and tell them how I was put in my place.

This could have been fixed so easily. Manufacture more watches, ask for order numbers to confirm with Amazon that we did pre-order soon enough, and send us a watch/ tin combo. A little legwork, yes, but the best companies do the extra work to make their customers happy.

But it turned out like this. Never again.

Registered just to add my name to the list. I think it’s disgusting that you are passing the buck to Amazon, and vice versa. Amazon is making a killing off every single 999 fan who has pre-ordered through them solely because they were offering the bonus item. Amazon should have made it clear that customers would no longer be receiving the bonus item — if there is a so-called “bonus edition” vs “standard edition” then there should have been the option to purchase one or the other, and when they were sold out, they should have stopped offering the bonus edition. You should have not promised buyers that no, don’t worry, you’ll get yours.

If the issue is a limited supply of watches, with Aksys being the supplier of said watches, then going “well, we were wrong, talk to Amazon” when you are clearly the ones limiting their supply is nothing short of insulting.

Just got out of a chat with an Amazon representative. They basically repeated what was stated in the email over and over, and eventually stated that Amazon accepts full responsibility for this issue and credited my account $10.

The $10 at least offset the fact that I would’ve gone to GameStop. I’m still extremely disappointed in both Aksys and Amazon that I won’t be receiving the product I was expecting.

I hope that information helps anyone else upset about this issue. I’m curious to see who all is actually getting the pre-order bonus, the rep danced around my questions asking how they determined who will and won’t be getting it. I just confirmed with a friend who pre-ordered the Vita version that he didn’t get the email, but he’s also unable to switch his order to 3DS like he was hoping to. He placed his order on 9/15; I placed mine on 9/17 because I was specifically waiting for the 3DS version. Guess I should’ve gone with the Vita order on the 15th.

I hope you do something to ensure we are able to get the watches. This is putting a really bad taste in my mouth, and I hate that because 999 is the best game series to come out in a very long time.

@sunsetsred I am sorry about the situation, and I wanted to leave a comment to help your curiosity. I never received an email from Amazon stating anything about the pre-order bonus issue and I (like you) had placed my order on the 17th of September for the 3DS (I ordered it sometime around 1:20 pm). I had also went through a live-chat with an Amazon representative to talk about the pre-order bonus problems and she had stated that I was fine on my order. Again I am sorry about your order and I hope things get straightened out, but I hope this helps in figuring out the situation.

The only thing Aksys needs to do is manufacture more watches enough to fulfill all early preorders, it’s not effing rocket science. Yes, it will cost them a bit, but I think it’s absolutely STUPID that they rather save a bit of pocket change instead of maintaining a strong image of a responsible company who respects its costumers and keeps their word.

Good job Aksys, save a couple of dollars for those Made In China watches, at least now we all know you don’t give a rat’s arse about your costumers.

I’d just like to chime in and say that it’s kinda ridiculous that people are straight up not buying this game because of this. I wasn’t able to get a watch either, but it’s really not that big of a deal.

    10.20.12 at 6:48 am

@ AndriaAlex At this point it isn’t even so much not getting the watch, it is that neither company is taking responsibility for this issue and I had the chance to get the watch pre-order when it was live but both on the Amazon page and Aksys said if you pre-ordered before the watch offer there was no need. Now both companies are just saying sorry, you are SOL and at most Amazon is just throwing a $5 or $10 coupon at us if even that. As of now the only way for me to get this watch, that I do want since I am a fan of the series, would be to try and grab it on ebay which I am sure will be at inflated prices because it is “limited”. The best thing to happen in this situation is for Aksys to make enough watches to fulfill those early pre-orders. They could even do it by having people send in their order invoice or pre-order confirmation. Anything because at the end of the day Amazon isn’t making the watches, Aksys is.

  19.  sunsetsred
    10.20.12 at 7:23 am

Damn. Albireo, it sounds like I missed it by a matter of hours. It’s ridiculous that the only people getting the bonus are people who ordered in a tiny window between 9/15 and 9/17.

Did Aksys REALLY think that since they had such terrible pre-order sales for the first game that GameStop had a ton of extra watches the first time around they could get away with only producing a handful of watches this time around? Did they completely forget how 999 was IMPOSSIBLE to find once word of mouth got out? Or how watches for the first game quickly ended up on eBay for upwards of $150? (and the only preorder bundle I saw yesterday on Amazon for Vita was priced as such) Didnt they think OH MAYBE they’d have an incredible demand for VLR because of the huge fanbase they accumulated? To predict that people pre-ordering before 9/15 would be fine because SURELY AMAZON WOULD HAVE PLENTY OF WATCHES OH WAIT WE ARE THE ONES DETERMINING HOW MANY WATCHES THEY GET LET’S MAKE SURE WE ONLY PROVIDE LIKE TWENTY is just really… ridiculous.

I’m still extremely curious as to what prompted Amazon to have an “OH your mother is a classy lady” moment and send out mass emails saying they unintentionally lied about the product they were providing. The rep couldnt answer me that one.

    10.20.12 at 7:32 am

And honestly? I cant think of ANY other game where there were SO FEW so-called “bonus editions” available. I guess most game companies actually plan ahead. I mean, most of us would have even paid an extra $20 for an ACTUAL deluxe edition, and if that was the route you wanted to go (like, again, MOST game releases offering highly sought after bonuses) you could’ve produced more bundles, had extremely happy customers, AND profited from it. This is poor planning, poor execution, and poor service, period.

  21.  pom85
    10.20.12 at 8:57 am

I too received a disappointing email from Amazon stating that my March 20th 3DS order of ZE:VLR will not be receiving the bonus. I was previously told not to cancel my order because the bonus would be applied to earlier pre-orders. Interestingly, the email also stated:
“Though the bonus edition still has very limited availability, we expect to receive more units soon. When we have more stock available, we’ll post availability updates on the product detail page”.
If more bonus editions are expected to arrive, why are earlier orders not being upgraded? I wish Aksys or Amazon would confirm if more bonus editions will be available. I don’t know whether I should keep my existing pre-order or cancel and re-order if/when more bonus units are available. The game is due to release in a few days and the timing of this botch up couldn’t be worse.

I Pre-ordered Zero Escape Virtue’s last reward in September ( the 12th to be exact) after doing TONS research and learning that amazon was giving away the watch as a pre-order bonus. After a couple of days we all learned that there were some complications and that quote “Those who have pre-ordered prior to “first wave” of pre-order bonuses will still receive the bundle. This means that if you placed your pre-order prior to September 17th, 2012, you will receive the watch. Do not cancel and re-order.”
So that is exactly what I did. I kept my order and didn’t bother with canceling an reordering. I was just informed today that I would not be revealing the watch because of “difficulties” there is a limited supply and I would not be getting a watch. Though I am still excited for the game, I am so overwhelmed with appointment’s that I was just notified today that I would not be receiving the watch, only a couple of days before the game even comes out! If I would have known I would have canceled my order and waited to change it or something. I just can’t believe it. I read your article telling us that there is nothing you can do but still… I was convinced I was getting it due to your previous post. I’m a die hard Zero escape fan who just wanted a watch I was told I was going to have, and now have to pay $100-$200 just to get it on ebay.

@AndriaAlex – I get what you’re saying, because ultimately this is all a distraction from the release of a game we’ve all been looking forward to playing since this time in 2010. I will still want to buy this game, I may refuse to do so through Amazon. The issue of pre-order bonuses is a separate matter from the game itself and does reflect poorly on both companies involved. I get that this is a freebie item with no intrinsic value in itself, that will have no bearing on the value of the gameplay in any way. This is not quite the debacle that Lionhead Studio’s gimped Fable II pre-order was, where they stripped out almost all of the collector’s items and still charged the same price. Its just embarrassing that the situation was so poorly handled, and its becoming increasingly obvious that the lion’s share of responsibility is in Aksys’ hands. Its one thing if your retailer screws you over. When its the guys who sell themselves on being customer-satisfaction oriented, whose image is largely dependent on the idea that they’re attuned to what their customer’s want… that’s something that can’t just be brushed aside. I’ve got no sympathy for the guys who waited until September to put in their pre-order, especially since it seems like half of them will actually get the watch. Those of us who pre-ordered half a year in advance made a difference. Amazon takes stock of pre-orders like that to determine how many units of a game they will order, so companies that drum up lots of pre-orders stand to have a better relationship with their retailer. Pre-order bonuses like this are supposed to reflect customer appreciation, and encourage customer loyalty (i.e. encourage customer’s to buy new instead of wait for used). Aksys (or some division within the company) should have taken a more active hand in managing the pre-order distribution situation to ensure that it was really going to reflect customer appreciation. Do you feel particularly appreciated by how this whole situation went down? Especially if you did put in that pre-order half a year ago?

  24.  calmed
    10.20.12 at 10:58 am

As much as I want to support the game, supporting Aksys just doesn’t feel right when they are willing to put zero effort into correcting this situation.

Amazon has some fault but they can’t remedy the situation as they do make the pre-order bonuses. Aksys also force our hands into using Amazon by not offering the pre-order bonuses to other retailers. They assured people who pre-ordered back in March that we would get the bonuses. Now that **** has hit the fan, they are point their fingers at Amazon who can’t help us.

  25.  Bobo
    10.20.12 at 2:49 pm

Absolutely disappointing. I came here looking for answers, and all I find is two companies pretending not to know what happened, and placing the blame each other.

I pre-ordered back in March, and was told specifically not to cancel, that I was guaranteed get the watch. Now this happens.

The real sad thing of this situation is how Aksys handled the situation. They just sound so cavalier. They know most of us won’t cancel, and they know that if we want more Zero Escape games, we will sit quietly and buy the game anyway. They’re counting on us forgetting this in a few days when the game comes out. No, I suppose the watch isn’t necessary for anything, but it’s the principal of it. I will be very careful if I ever end up pre-ordering another Aksys game.

  26.  cat42
    10.20.12 at 2:57 pm

You know what I think is hysterical? The fact that Amazon is saying that Aksys will be making more watches. At least that’s what the email says. They’re saying we should cancel our preorders, and wait til that version is released before buying the game. So Aksys, if you are already doing a currently unannounced 3rd wave of watches like Amazon says you are, why can’t those be allocated to the people who were promised them?

Or perhaps you aren’t doing another wave of watches, in which case any further stock of the watches are ones that had previously been allocated to your fans that preordered early?

Anyway, I look forward to your announcement of your 3rd wave of watches that Amazon says you’ll be doing. Personally, I hope you announce it before the release date. I understand your 3rd wave of watches that Amazon is saying you’re making won’t make it until after the release date, and I’m willing to wait until they are done.

However, if Amazon is lying about you making another batch of watches, you may wish to investigate where this new batch is coming from, and why it’s not being allocated to people who preordered…

Not that you’ll be reading any of these comments. After all, this is clearly Amazon’s fault, and you have no power to ask where their stock is coming from if it isn’t you guys.

  27.  RedMage
    10.20.12 at 4:05 pm

I find the way this fiasco is being handled completely unacceptable.

Aksys, YOU made a mistake. YOU specificly posted in a blog post on THIS site, that those who preordered before Sept 17 WERE COVERED for the bonus item and to NOT cancel their preorders and reorder to receive the watch.

This information turned out to be incorrect. Throwing your hands up and saying “Sorry guys, out of our hands” in response to the issue is terrible customer service. The correct course of action is to apologize and look into making a special third run on the watches for those who preordered early. The right thing to do is make a online form or e-mail address in which early preorders could provide their Amazon invoice and receive a watch when available.

I don’t care about getting the watch at launch. It’s a matter of principle. I want to see your company take responsibility for the mix up and atleast attempt to correct the situation. Your company localizes very niche games, our loyalty and support is something that should not be taken for granted and be brushed aside.

Come on Aksys, do the right thing.

  28.  HADAA
    10.20.12 at 5:55 pm

Instead of manufacturing more watches, Aksys, at least honor these people by offering a $10 off coupon or something. Don’t just say you can’t do anything, you have lied to your customers (although you didn’t intend to) so at least pick up some responsibilities and offer a deal.

  29.  obvioustwoll
    10.20.12 at 6:37 pm

@Hadaa – I don’t want Aksys to throw money at us because its not an issue of compensation. The wathes would have been a freebie pack-in, maybe if the so-called “pre-order bonus edition” cost more it would be an appropriate response. A sincere apology and some effort towards an actual solution are what the majority of us really want. Speaking for myself, the opportunity to buy a watch would be a welcome solution at this point. Perhaps those who were promised watches would get first right of refusal to buy one at the same price point as the original 999 surplus watches two years ago, with the remaining stock being made available after all of those orders had been served.

Hey, Aksys. I just did your PR guys job for you. When do I get my paycheck?

  30.  Gaardus
    10.20.12 at 7:22 pm

I’m confused. I placed an order for the pre-order bonus edition on September the 28th (before the second wave sold out), so I should receive the pre-order watch, right? Yet yesterday I received an e-mail from Amazon saying they didn’t know when the item would be available. At the time, I assumed it was simply because the estimated delivery date was wrong (they had been claiming the game would be delivered between the 17th and the 20th). Now I’m not so sure. Will I be receiving the watch and game? I just don’t want my order to sit around unfilled, waiting for a watch that will never come.

    10.21.12 at 1:59 am

Aksys, this is not okay. Your company should not have taken any official stance on telling customers to not cancel their normal pre-orders to purchase the special edition. Whether intentional or not, this led to misinforming your customers. You can’t just get away with a “OOPS, sorry.”

According to California Business and Professions Code section 17500 (http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/cgi-bin/displaycode?section=bpc&group=17001-18000&file=17500-17509), it was unlawful to make the public think we were buying one product when we are really getting another. This code makes no distinction on whether if the intent was direct or indirect, only that the information was untrue or misleading.

Your representatives promised us that we would receive a product that we are ultimately not receiving. [ http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?p=42269903#post42269903. This is a clear violation of this provision. I will be filing a complaint with the California Better Busisness Bureau.

I’ve had success in the past with going to the Better Business Bureau for untrue and misleading actions by game companies. Here is the link to the California BBB. They’re all business there, so please stick to facts only. Try to weed out opinion and conjecture. Truth is that the facts are damning enough. Find the link here: http://www.la.bbb.org/ComplaintInformation.aspx

If enough people ask for a copy of my complaint, I’ll put it up here or on the forum. Or on Neogaf/Reddit if my post is taken down.

You’re good Garrdus, people who ordered the 3DS pre-order bonus edition got that message form amazon because the 3DS version was incorrectly listed as being released on September 1st rather than it’s correct release date causing a little derp in the system thinking Amazon is having a hard time finding stock of an item that has been released rather than it being a pre-order.

Hey I have a question for those of you who received an e-mail from Amazon.com. Did anyone go back to their Amazon account and check their order status? I am just curious if it the order changed from: “Zero Escape: Virtue’s Last Reward (with Pre order bonus item)”, to Just saying a copy of “Zero Escape: Virtue’s Last Reward.”

I ordered way back in March, but canceled and placed a new order on Sept. 16th when I saw the Pre Order Bouns for Vita only. I didn’t received an e-mail from Amazon, not yet.., however, I was just curious if the status on your orders changed when you go into your accounts. Because if it didn’t I am not really sure if I am getting one either since I technically placed my order before the “First Wave” which was on Sept. 17th.

Count me in as another affected fan. Amazon is not doing anything at all to help out people who preordered prior to the date that the bonus items went up for preorders. As a huge fan, I can’t believe that I’m being told right before release that I won’t get the bonus edition that I was told I would receive. Many of us didn’t cancel our existing order and reorder when the bonus order was listed based on the information that you provided. Right now I feel like everyone is just pointing fingers, shrugging and saying “sorry”.

Before I say anything, I am happy that we are getting this game, watch or no watch. Let’s get that straight. Now like many others I lost my pre-order as a result of Amazon’s errors, but that seems to be a common problem with Amazon…..errors. They also don’t accommodate you when they mess up, so I canceled my order and got the game somewhere else. I know GameStop can be hard to deal with, but I at least got the 999 watch with them and they were on the VLR site, but I get that even GameStop has been known to screw up. With that said, why can’t AKSYS have their own pre-order page and get the watches out to fans themselves with those pre-orders? As they say. If you want something done right, you have to do it yourself. At the end of the day, I would rather have a localization than that watch. I want to personally thank AKSYS for taking the time to bring this title over, despite the pre-order issues. Thanks a bunch.

@supergamequeen – the lack of an internal fulfillment option might be a matter of operational expenses. I don’t think Atlus USA sells directly to customers either. NISA does, but they seem to do a high volume of sales in pricey merchandise that can somewhat offset these costs for them.

That’s true. I guess they should avoid a bonus unless they’re going to sell regular special edition bundle for a little more money.

So, good news everyone! Without announcing it, Aksys has made a 3rd wave of bonus editions for you to preorder! Just like Amazon said they would!

Either that, or the stock that was supposed to go the people who preordered prior to September 17th is now being sold off… All I know is that I’m preordering both, and sending back whichever one isn’t the bonus edition.

Found this, which may lend a little more background info to people who want to read between the lines…
    http://www.amazon.com/Changed-shipping-theres-estimated-arrival/forum/FxDWMU0X8LH38S/TxMSPCS3ZE7SLJ/1/ref=cm_cd_dp_tp_t?_encoding=UTF8&asin=B009APQ9R4

And also remember, Amazon did say in one of the earlier ads that they could modify things regarding the preorder bonus at any time… So I would put most (not all, without enough info) but most of the blame on Amazon for this…

So snce I posted earlier the watches became available and are gone again? Why isn’t this stock going to those who have already preordered the game?

    @TatteredRagDoll

We’re still trying to obtain the following item[s] you ordered on September 28, 2012 (Order# XXXXXXXXXXXXXX).

“Zero Escape: Virtue’s Last Reward (with Pre order bonus item)”

Still want it? We’ll keep on trying. To keep your order for this item open, please click the link below. Otherwise, we’ll cancel your order on November 18, 2012, if we haven’t located it by then.

We will make every effort to get the delayed item(s) to you as soon as possible.

It wasn’t showing up for me but now I see it. I went ahead and ordered one just in case.

    10.21.12 at 5:46 pm

What you’re saying and the discussion topic you’re quoting from are two different things. You’re talking about the Pre-order Bundle pages going live, the discussion topic refers to an order that was already made.

When the second wave of watches went live, the Vita page had a “pre-order” button, while the 3DS page had a “add to cart: ships in 2-3 weeks”. This caused the delivery estimate to be Oct 17 – Oct 22, but Amazon couldn’t send out the order to accommodate the delivery date, seeing as the game hadn’t be released yet. They then sent an automated message asking to authorize a delay. This information was already covered in the link you posted…

  50.  TatteredRagDoll
    10.21.12 at 5:54 pm

@cat42, does it make sense now?

  51.  cat42
    10.21.12 at 6:00 pm

    @TatteredRagDoll

I probably shouldn’t be directly outright accusatory of Amazon, but what I’m claiming this supports (and expands upon) my previous theory that I’ve hinted at before.

Basically, Amazon allowed too many people to order in the second wave, and in order to fulfill those orders, used the stock that was to be allocated to people who preordered before September 17th.

Now that they have allocated enough stock to fulfill all of the orders from the second wave, the excess of that is being offered as a third wave.

Unless, of course, none were ever allocated to people who preordered early, and Aksys is making up for it by manufacturing an unannounced 3rd wave which is being made available to people who’s preorder upgrade was taken away.

I’ll let you choose what to believe.

  52.  TatteredRagDoll
    10.21.12 at 6:19 pm

No, that’s really not it at all.

As I said, when the second wave went live, someone goofed on the coding of the 3DS product page and rather than “pre-order” it said “add to cart: ships in 2-3 weeks”.

This caused the delivery estimate to be Oct 17 – Oct 22.

Basically the system treated it as a product that was already in stock, albeit back-ordered, and gave it the delivery estimate as such. For obvious reasons, the delivery estimate couldn’t be met, and when that happened, the system sent an automated message asking to authorize a delay. Delay authorized, albeit needlessly, as the deadline for the authorization was November 18, before which the game would have been released and orders filled anyway.

The e-mail you’re quoting, asking about the delay, was sent on the 19th, meaning that no matter what the game wouldn’t have arrived by the end of the delivery window on the 22nd.

Trust me on this one, seeing as the order, email, and replies you’re referring to are actually mine.

  53.  ExKage
    10.21.12 at 7:38 pm

I would be a little surprised if there’s a correlation between the “delay” on the 3DS preorder bonus products and this “third wave” that people can find through using the links previously provided by CS or saved bookmarks. I was only able to find the Vita preorder product page because Amazon CS linked to it a couple of times in replying to my CS questions and using it as a way to tell me I preordered the wrong product to get the bonus.

  54.  cat42
    10.21.12 at 8:34 pm

    @TatteredRagDoll

Well, if I am talking out my rear, I apologize. It’s just I find it highly suspicious that people who preordered early ended up not having their product upgraded due “limited availability”, and yet here is a third wave, even though Aksys has announced no such thing… And I need to find evidence to justify my little conspiracy theory, so I’ll do the irrational thing and bash the round peg facts into my square hole theory so I can place most of the blame on Amazon.

But, if I want to switch gears a moment, and seriously create a different theory…

Here’s a different possible chain of events (which I can hope is really what happened.

Aksys makes the deal with Amazon to do the exclusive under the understanding that early preorders will automatically be upgraded.

Somewhere at Amazon, either do to human, computer, or both error, all of the first wave (or at least most) bonuses are allocated for sale rather than upgrades. This mistake is not noticed until a few days before release.

Now, there are no more bonuses, Amazon notifies customers and complaints ensue. Aksys, being a small company, can’t afford to really take the blame, or handle all the complaints, and instead forwards everything to Amazon.

Neither company can say anything, because of contracts preventing it.

Aksys does a secret 3rd run of bonus watches, but by now it’s too late to do the auto upgrade for whatever reason, so instead they only tell people who preordered it early about it via email so they will have a chance at getting it.

I noticed the one’s who notified me about this at all were Aksys, while Amazon said nothing when the preorder went live. I also noticed that even though the bonus editions are available for sale, they don’t come up when you search…

I like this theory better, because no one is really a bad guy, and Aksys come off as doing their best to rectify the situation.

    10.21.12 at 8:35 pm

Yay grammar errors! I should have proof read that before posting, lol.

  56.  obvioustwoll
    10.21.12 at 9:03 pm

It’s an interesting theory, but I never got that email from Aksys. I’m betting they didn’t know anything about this supposed “third wave” until after it had already gone live.

  57.  yakuri
    10.21.12 at 9:49 pm

Cat42: the reasons that led to this situation could be those and one might be more at fault than the other, but what upsets me is that instead of both Amazon and Aksys saying “hey guys sorry for the mess, we’re working hard to make things right just give us some time” and work together, they immediately pointed fingers, shrugged shoulders and washed hands. I don’t think Aksys saying “sorry can’t do anything, ask that other guy” is their best way to rectify the situation, more the ways of a sleazy company. I do think both have still time to rectify their mistakes and do well to their costumers, but in all honesty I’m not so sure they’ll do anything at all.

  58.  ExKage
    10.21.12 at 10:02 pm

I’ve never received any email about this “third wave” but I decided to check the links that Amazon CS provided to show that my order was for the wrong product (even when the preorder was made before the bonus product page went up!).

I would like some better explanation, but I now have a higher chance at getting a preorder bonus item than on Oct 19th when all I got were “LOLZ YOU PREORDERED THE PRODUCT FROM THE WRONG PAGE” answers.

  59.  bujinkanrn
    10.22.12 at 6:29 am

I never got any email whatsoever from Aksys or Amazon about a “third print run” of the watches. If I weren’t so ticked, I’d say the whole situation is laughable. Well, at least I’ll be $40 bucks richer come release day now, as I’ve canceled my pre-order.

  60.  Gamemaster64
    10.22.12 at 6:29 am

Don’t get why all pre orders can’t have this or why this isn’t on your store. You have your own store did you not forget? Don’t see why it has to go through amazon when you could done all the pre orders yourselves.

Never saw it on amazon and didn’t know about it so since I’m getting nothing with the game it was logic to go for a cheaper price. If I known this I would have stayed with amazon.

  61.  yakuri
    10.22.12 at 10:13 am

@Gamemaster64: As the moment I post this, both preorder with the watch in Amazon are live. Take a chance and grab either version (vita, 3DS) now.

  62.  jcal94
    10.22.12 at 2:38 pm

So, as of right now, 5:36PM Central US Time, apparently the watch bonus is still active for the Vita. I have already pre-ordered from Gamestop and will be picking it up there as soon as possible, but I wanted to double-check on here… The watch edition of the Vita on Amazon won’t come up as backordered, will it? It’s not giving me an estimated delivery date, when I’ve heard others have gotten it… Any knowledge on this?

  63.  bujinkanrn
    10.23.12 at 12:40 am

After canceling my pre-order, I checked just about every hour on Amazon and never saw the bonus edition for either the Vita or 3DS. Those of us who have jobs just aren’t able to do that 24/7. VERY poor execution by Aksys. You should have printed enough to be sure all pre-orders were covered. If you had extras, it’s not like it would have been hard to sell them in your store. I’ll buy the game used, thank you.

  64.  finiteHP
    10.23.12 at 9:29 am

The annoying thing for me is I don`t know if I`m getting the pre-order bonus. I pre-ordered back in May from amazon.ca (amazon.com won`t let Canadians order games from amzon.com). Amazon.ca NEVER lists pre-order bonuses, but I always get the bonus. I haven`t got an e-mail from amazon about this problem. I don`t know if this because I`m getting the bonus, or if it`s because Canadians aren`t getting the bonus period. Guess I`ll find out when they ship my pre-order next week.

  65.  Kichy
    10.26.12 at 9:49 am

@finiteHP Yes, amazon.com does let Canadians order from their website! I’m Canadian and I ordered from the second wave, it got shipped and arrived just fine. At least, I think it arrived just fine, I haven’t actually been home to grab the package yet!

As for the issue at hand…I really don’t blame Aksys for this at all. I really blame Amazon. I can’t imagine a company saying something like Aksys did about not cancelling their pre-orders unless they had word and the go-ahead from Amazon themselves. I fully and completely blame Amazon for those of you who aren’t getting your preorders, and if a tiny little watch is really the cause for all this butthurt, then let me be one of the first to offer mine to you.

Seriously, it’s just a plastic watch. A mistake was made and miscommunications happened. It’s not the end of the world, and I imagine those of you who are fans of this very niche genre who are promising to never buy from Aksys again will also be some of the first people to complain as to why we don’t have games like this on our side of the pond.

I’m just shaking my head at this whole thing. Aksys, you’ve still got a dedicated fan with me! I’ve preordered the vita version but went out the other day to buy the 3DS version too. I have never done that with a game in my life! That is how much I enjoy your company and this series.

I’m also very sorry this had to happen, and I’m sorry about the severe backlash you are receiving because of it.

  66.  IBNobody
    10.26.12 at 12:46 pm

Got screwed by Amazon, too, and I was an early-August 3DS pre-order. Guess this is the last time I preorder a game from Amazon.

Honestly, Aksys should step up and make sure all pre-orders get a bonus. We are your fans. We are the ones who bought the game even before there was a bonus. You guys need to reward us, in some fashion.

Here’s a simple thing you (Aksys) can do that is free for you and better than a watch. When Zero Escape 2 comes out, put our names or handles in the credits.

  67.  Zer0_Alpha
    10.29.12 at 10:06 am

Why didnt amazon just send the pre-order bonus when they said they would? I mean when they say they would its like making a promise, and they broke it so i am really mad about that.

  68.  bujinkanrn
    11.05.12 at 7:30 pm

    @Zer0_Alpha
Yeah, I’m still ticked, and the game’s been out for over a week. Fortunately, I found a used 3DS copy for sale to keep Aksys from getting anything out of it. I had pre-ordered back in April for the Vita. When I got Amazon’s email telling me I wasn’t getting the bonus but offered me links to the limited edition, I tried for several days w/ no luck. The day before release, I canceled my pre-order for VLR as well as Ragnarok: Tactics. Does Aksys owe me anything? Nope. Did it give me a really contemptible attitude towards them? Absolutely! In fact, I look forward to purchasing every possible game USED that I otherwise would have bought new on day one. The only way I can voice my displeasure w/ Aksys is by voting w/ my wallet, so that’s what I’ve done.

  69.  porkiewpyne
    11.06.12 at 1:56 am

@Zer0_Alpha & bujinkanrn: AFAIK there were watches allocated for those who preordered earlier. And only those who pre-ordered earlier were given the exclusive link. If you want to really blame someone, blame the fool who leaked the link to the whole world causing people to rush for it. Yes I agree, it could have been managed better. But honestly, when you first preordered the game, you bought it for the game and the game only so yea.

  70.  bujinkanrn
    11.06.12 at 2:46 am

    @porkiewpyne
…and the game I got: USED. Amazon’s not entirely to blame if Aksys was capable of opening up the 2nd & 3rd waves of pre-order bonuses. Imo, there never should’ve been another wave. The bonuses should have been allocated retroactively as Aksys claimed. Thanks to poor management, Ebay is running rampant w/ people only wanting to resell the watches for a quick buck. Pathetic. In principle, I won’t support a company who holds a carrot in front of a [previously] loyal fan only to jerk it away at the last minute. They only hurt themselves.

  71.  bujinkanrn
    11.08.12 at 5:18 pm

I got an email today from Amazon apologizing for their inability to provide the pre-order watch. In that email same email, they provided a $10 credit to my account for the inconvenience. This was unexpected and not owed to me, though nice to see Amazon at least tried to make the best of a bad situation. That shows better character than Aksys, who has sat in a corner with their collective thumb up their posterior waiting to pull a plum: doing nothing but pin the blame on Amazon. This is the reason for my animosity toward Aksys – I could have forgiven them had they not displayed such poor character.
