To Zero Escape Fans,

For the past few months, Aksys Games Localization, Inc. and Spike Chunsoft, developer of Zero Escape: Virtue’s Last Reward, with cooperation from Nintendo of America and Nintendo Co. Ltd., have been investigating a Zero Escape: Virtue’s Last Reward crash issue on the Nintendo® 3DS first reported by our fans (we would like to emphasize that this occurs only in the Nintendo®3DS version).

Before we delve into our investigation, we would first like to express our regret for any inconvenience this has caused. We completely understand that this affects the gaming experience of Zero Escape: Virtue’s Last Reward. We would also like to thank Zero Escape fans everywhere for bringing this problem to our attention. You provided us with indispensable insight and truly helped this investigation move forward.

Our Investigation

When entering the PEC room during the “Escape Section,” and attempting to save, some fans have reported that their game crashes, losing all saved data. Upon investigation, Aksys Games and Spike Chunsoft have confirmed that this does occur, but the chances are dependent on whether or not certain conditions are met. We have evidence to suggest that playing the game for a lengthy, continuous amount of time increases the probability of this crash occurring. As such, we have a detailed explanation of a workaround as explained after the break.

**Please note that this workaround may contain spoilers.**

The Workaround

Flow Chart detailing path

Upon reaching the path of the yellow Chromatic Door, choose “ally” during the first AB game. This will lead to the blue Chromatic Door. Enter the blue Chromatic Door.

After entering Blue Chromatic Door (place that you can save)

Save Point:  At this point you may save at any point during the “Novel Section.” The last chance you will be able to save is in the “lever room,” before entering the PEC. Once you have saved, completely quit and turn off the game.  Then turn back on the game to resume playing.

Do not save at any point during the “Escape Section” of the PEC. Once you have completed the PEC room you may once again save.

We will be sure to relay any more pertinent information as it comes forward.

Thank you for your cooperation and understanding.

I actually lost my save saving even during the novel section when they were inside the PEC room! Took a while to get back to where I was before I lost my save…

But I still loved the game and story! :)

Will there be a patch in the future fixing this problem?

I agree with Renanyuu, we need a patch for this. Even though we can avoid it tells that not a lot of bug testing wasn’t performed and will look bad on both companies as a whole if it isn’t fixed. Also I wonder if this was a problem in the Japanese versions of the game. If it was it would be terrible that the glitch was there for months before US release and nothing was done about it.

@mudpiex579 I think it is in the Japanese version, but aksys is only a localization company so I they can’t do really anything about it.

I’m so happy this issue has been finally acknowledged and that an official workaround has been posted. Better late than never!

Not a perfect solution of course, but at least now I’m no longer afraid to start my first playthrough. :)

I looked at this workaround and played the game accordingly on my first runthrough. My first room was the PEC room and I was able to complete it and save afterwards. Soon after, around 17 hours in, I was in the warehouse trying to complete Clover’s Ending when the game crashed (novel). Sadly, I think the glitch can happen in any room, and probably gets more dangerous the longer you play. I can still attempt to load the save, I am not met with any corrupted save issues, but the screen just stays black and I’m forced to shut down the 3DS.

I’m quite happy that this issue has been addressed, but I really hope a patch is in the works because I don’t think I can risk playing again if this glitch can just happen anywhere.

I don’t believe this. This bug has been around for nearly a year now, and no one’s bothered to fix it? I got this game for Christmas; I’m returning it tomorrow and have already told all my friends (who loved 999) to stay well away. Good job I guess?
