One of the classics by Uchikoshi (999) and his colleague Nakazawa (Myself;Yourself) is getting a remake for the XBox 360 -- 5pb is set to revamp Ever17, a story about 6 people trapped in a collapsing underwater theme park, and their fight to save their lives and to bring down the powers behind the 'accident.'

Fans can expect to see new features such as:
- New scenarios and endings
- Redesigned backgrounds
- 3-D animated characters
- New CGs and clothing designs
For the newcomers, Ever17 is the spiritual predecessor of 999, and is part of the well renowned Infinity series. Lauded for their intricate plots and seamless blending of science fiction with mystery and suspense, along with colorful casts and unique set ups, the Infinity series is regarded as one of the greatest Visual Novel series of all time, both in Japan and in English speaking circles. Ever17 is the most popular title in this series, heavily acclaimed for its fascinating characters and stunning twists, featuring a plot so elaborate that it keeps you guessing until the very end. Almost all who played it have been blown away by the story, which is of a similar style to 999 (albeit without the strong puzzle component), but with even more twists and an engaging storyline that's almost 3x the length of 999's.

To top things off, Ever17 is also voiced by famous seiyuus and singers including: Yuu Asakawa (Sakaki in Azumanga Daioh, Rider in Fate/Stay Night), Kana Ueda (Rin Tohsaka in Fate/Stay Night, Yumi Fukuzawa in Maria-sama ga Miteru) and Souichiro Hoshi (Kira Yamato in Gundam SEED, Keiichi Maebara in Higurashi no Naku Koro ni).

Anyone who enjoyed 999 would definitely enjoy Ever17 too.

Ever17 was originally released on the PS2 and Dreamcast in Japan in 2002, then was later ported onto the PC in 2003 as "Ever17- Premium Edition". It was translated and released into English in 2005. The game has been ported onto several other consoles in Japan, but this is the first time it's receiving a remake.

It has a devoted fanbase, allowing it to constantly hold its place in the Top 3 on vndb.org, despite being nearly 10 years old. It currently has an average score of 9.05/10.

To be honest, much of the plot is the same. 999 is darker (I think, I haven't finished Ever 17 since it's on my home computer, and not my laptop, so I rarely get to see it) but the general construct is sort of the same. A group of tourists get stuck in an underwater amusement park that is sinking, and they have to seek a way out. While there are less puzzles (None, I think XD) there are more choices you can make. Honestly, my first thought when I played 999 was "What the hell is this, Ever 17?!" XD Both are different in the main core though. 999 is a psychological horror, while I would put Ever 17 more so as a psychological mystery.

Wow, is it that similar? I haven't played 999 myself so I have no idea. From what I've heard, the basic setting is similar since it involves a group fighting to save themselves from drowning, but in E17 a lot happens after they get out. I'd imagine that the plots diverge drastically there.

What I'm curious about is... what are the characters and their interactions like? Are they similar in both games?

No, I'd say that the characters are vastly different in both games, as they all have different personalities than the other cast.

I love this type of mystery story! I don't have an Xbox, sadly, but I might buy one if more games of this type get localized. Count me in the supporters!

Yeah, they ARE very different too. It's just the initial feel between the two is rather similar at first. The first thing I noticed, however, was the animation for the rushing water XD But yes, the characters and overall feel is very different, just the core situation struck me as similar lol. In 999 you just always have this feel of "I'm going to get killed, I KNOW it!", it's just one of those games. Ever 17 I have yet to really feel that, and it focuses more on the characters, where as 999 is more about the situation.

The characters themselves are vastly different, but once you play through all of 999, you can definitely draw parallels between the two stories and how they turned out.

As for the sense of being killed, of course that's not in E17, no one is trying to kill each other duh xD
But that's why it's able to spend more time with the characterizations and that's why I like it more I was able to understand them a lot better after beating the game than in 999, those characters were a bit too limited but that's probably because it was a smaller game oh well.

If it was to be localized, I would have to buy an Xbox360 to play it... Though I'm planning to get a PS3, I could easily change my mind if there'll be english VNs for the X...

Also, what about the PSP version of Ever17?

The PSP version is pretty much just a port of the PC version with a small, minor addition. This version is a remake, and will probably include that small addition while offering so much more (see the top post).

Just so you guys know, more details should be out at the beginning of this March, so keep an eye out!

I have yet to play my copy of the PC release, and I don't have a 360, but if Aksys licenses it I will certainly convince a few VN-reading friends to buy copies. :)

I don't have an 360 myself either, but I will definitely buy one if Aksys localizes this.

My family got a 360 recently for the sole purpose of the Kinect. I'm shocked (in a good way) that there will be an update to this awesome game for a system I couldn't think of buying any games for yet. I know there are plenty of games for the 360 but this would be on the top priority for me after the Kinect stuff is done with my family. I am definitely all for a localization of them and would push my friends to get it too.

If I can just get another vn, then count me in. I loved 999 and I saw the pc ver a while ago and wasn't sure if I should get it but I'll settle for the remake. =P

To be blunt, 999 steals a lot of ideas from Ever17. To me, 999 was somewhat disappointing as a lot of the good parts of 999 were taken from Ever17, but not used as well as in Ever17 (I was mainly disappointed by 999's twists...it's nice that June's watch is upside down, but in the end, did it affect the plot even one bit? In Ever17, every plot twist is actually very well thought out.) 999 tries to be Ever17 with more suspense, but falls short.

Ever17 has much less suspense than 999; whereas in 999 people are running all the time, in Ever17 they're leisurely eating chicken sandwiches (which has become somewhat of an in-joke because it's a recurring event; the only food they have is the chicken sandwiches from the theme park's food stand). The people in 999 have only 9 hours to escape, and they are forced to solve puzzles by some mysterious person. In Ever17, they have seven full days (not because someone will flood everything if time runs out, but because structural damage combined with water pressure will cause the bottom floors to implode in ~7 days), and they try to cooperate to survive and find a way out, only noticing that everything just doesn't add up while they're stuck there. The focus is much less on suspense and much more on the mystery and character interactions.

Ever17 is the best story in any kind of medium (be it movies, anime, manga, games, visual novels, etc) I have ever read in my life. When I was relatively new to VNs, I went in thinking 'the rating is probably a bit exaggerated, there's no way I'm never going to read a better VN than this'. I instantly got hooked, but it becomes even much, much better at the end, where you simply get some of the best plot twists I've ever seen in rapid succession (and yes, they're all of the 'BUT OF COURSE NOW IT ALL MAKES SENSE WHY DIDN'T I SEE THIS BEFORE' kind, completely fair yet done in such a way that you simply don't realize it until it's finally revealed). I personally think everybody should have read Ever17 once in their life, and it would be great if Aksys could localize it, so many more people can get that once-in-a-lifetime experience when it all comes together. (Ever17 is one of the three VNs I have rated 10/10, along with Remember11 [by same author, opinions vary very strongly] and Umineko. For comparison, I rated 999, 8/10, although it comes close to 7/10.)

If, for some bizarre reason, Aksys decides not to localize Ever17, then I still strongly recommend getting the original version of the game. It's just that amazing.
