Eurogamer: What ever happened to Guilty Gear? Why did you stop making it?

Daisuke Ishiwatari: Guilty Gear got too hardcore for some people, so we wanted to reset the level of entrance. BlazBlue was the answer to it. Also, the generation of Guilty Gear players has become a certain age – maybe a little bit too old for playing games. So making that reset brings in a new generation of fighting game players. Then they will be with us for the next few years.

Too old? Street Fighter is older, became easier to get into, and look how successful it is now.
Didn't he say he was going to conclude the GG series? Why not bring both GG and BB worlds together like SNK did with KOF, and have the best of both?

Isn't it more cut and dry than that? Heard something about them no longer having rights to the Guilty Gear property

Except that Ishiwatari said a year afterwards that they were going to make a new Guilty Gear game, he said during the Guilty Gear x BlazBlue music concert in January - in response to a question about the franchise - that "Guilty Gear fans will not be disappointed", and now we have him acting like they just stopped working for other reasons. All of those statements sure makes it sound like it had nothing to do with SEGA, even though it's a possibility. It's a really strange situation.

I saw one interview with him a little while ago and he mentioned losing it to Sega, although I know he worked with Sega on GG2 in at least one way.
Or I thought so, anyway.

From what I understand, ASW and Sega had a publishing relationship for quite a while up to the rights dispute - some GG games were published by Sammy (a division of Sega) in Japan, and up to Dust Strikers and Judgment (I think), Sammy were the publishers for the games in the U.S. as well. If ASW lost the rights to someone, it's Sega in all likelihood, but Ishiwatari's conflicting statements on the matter (noted in my previous post) pretty much puts a giant question mark on the status of the franchise.

If Sega does own the rights to GG, they're probably pissed at ASW. If Sega owns the rights to GG, BlazBlue was basically a giant middle finger direct at Sega.

Sega: We own Guilty Gear! You work for us now!
ASW: ...or we can just create a bunch of similar characters and call it something different.

BlazBlue seemed lazy. The roster was small. That size roster might have been acceptable in the days of MK1 and SF2, but not in present day. In present day, a BB or even a BBCS roster is pathetic. Look what you're up against, franchises like SoulCalibur, Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter, Tekken, MvC and VirtuaFighter which have been around forever and have large arrays of characters. To go from the GGXXAC roster to the much smaller BB roster was just terrible. And the overpriced DLC characters in BBCS just rubbed in the fact that the game was light on playable characters.

Really? I mean, they draw every frame, of every animation. That takes a long time. A lot longer than animating a 3D model. And while it's true that GGXACP had a much larger roster than BB, when Guilty Gear originally came out, it only had 10 characters (13 if you count hidden/boss characters). It took 9 years to get to the roster it had in Accent Core Plus. Hate on the roster size if you want, but calling it "lazy" seems like a bit much to me.

Lazy was an unfair choice of words, and I apologize. True, Guilty Gear had a much smaller roster when it started. And when Tekken and Street Fighter started, they had much smaller rosters too. But the unfortunate reality is that if a new fighting game wants to compete against the established franchises, it needs to offer a comparable amount of characters. In today's market, a first effort should have a minimum of 20 playable characters; Calamity Trigger had 12.

And look at Guilty Gear. When did Guilty Gear really explode? With GGXX and it many incarnations, which was the first time the game really had a big roster.

A bigger roster also means much much less balance. Look at any of the 3D fighters with huge rosters...you may as well only play top tier characters if you are going to be competitive.

Look at the last iterations of Soul Caliber, Street Fighter, Tekken, and MK. Yeah you can choose whoever you want but unless you are great with the terrible characters you will never see people play them. For example I play main Maxi in every Soul Caliber and usually second Sophitia for those matchups when I know my Maxi doesn't stand a chance. As Sophy I wouldn't normally have to worry about it.

More characters always has to be balanced or else the game will die (which I think has happened to Soul Caliber).

Soul Calibur died/is dying because 3 was a horrible for tournaments and pro play and 4 is just bland with shite netcode.

His point stands about the large character rosters, though - the larger the roster, the harder it is to maintain balance. That's why I'm OK with BlazBlue's bit-by-bit approach - it means a small roster at the beginning, but it also gradually grows while continuing to be balanced.

This isn't entirely true. i'm pretty sure they said in an interview somewhere that for BlazBlue, they actually created 3D models, and then traced over them to make the sprites. So they're not fully hand-drawn, but they have the hand-drawn look but at CG quality.
