I need help.
I have never played a Guilty Gear game, but I am more than interested in BlazBlue. The only 2D fighters I have really played were the Marvel vs. Capcom Series and of course Street Fighter (1 & 2). I am kind of new to 2D fighters and would like some advice on a "Must Play" list of fighting games that you think would be good to play before BlazBlue is released. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Good games you can get right now are KoF '98 and Guilty Gear Accent Core Plus, both on PS2, and Street Fighter IV, on PS3 or 360. I would recommend Accent Core Plus, though, as it'd better prepare you for Blazblue than anything else.

u should try real fighters in order to get that fighting edge and sprit. try these game
: Tekken 5 or dr 5 either one
The street fighter series ( starting with third stike then to 4
melty blood (this gives u a good view in seting up combos)
viruta fighter 5
kof (not sure which ones to choose take jasonpaul's advice on that
guilty gear accent core plus(of course)

Those are great games to get into especially if you're looking to get to tournament level, but they're still fun even if you're not.
If you just want to check out some cool 2D fighters, here's a few I like:
Samurai Shodown Anthology
Capcom vs. SNK 2
Street Fighter Alpha 3 (or just pick up Alpha Anthology)
KOF XI
Capcom Classics Collection 1+2: has a few Street Fighter II games you might want to check out
Fatal Fury: Battle Archives 1+2
Eternal Champions - my favorite, but admittedly it's broken as all heck! Still awesome, just check out this video (warning: not for the gore haters)

Just please, PLEASE keep clear of Clayfighter. Worst game ever. Even ticked me off as a 10 year old.

I concur with most of what was said above. If you have the money you should pick up a dreamcast with Rival schools and Garou:MOTW. Garou is essentially the best Of Fatal Fury and KOF combined and Rival schools is just a very unique fighter. Do you have an arcade nearby?

if your a fan of street fighter (aka Ken Fighter to some) pick up the Alpha Anthalolgy, its well worth the purchase considering what you get with the CD (All 3 arcade perfect ports of all Alpha, Gem Fighters included.)
If you got an arcade near you however and they have fighting games to play, play em and see if they have console ports so you can pratice at home. Play Blazblue if you get the chance, sadly i have to wait for console release for 360, but summer is almost here so...yeah.
Its a little off topic but did anyone notice a literal guilty gear reference to heaven or hell in the arcade intro to Blazblue? It's a before the "be ready for the rebel part", just thought i share that, sorry if its old or regurgitated. ;)

The only arcade places I have nearby that I know of is Dave & Busters and Gameworks.
The first recommended game I picked up was Guilty Gear Accent Core Plus for the PS2, and I have to say...I cannot believe I did not get into the GG series sooner. The game is just an incredible 2D fighter.

(not a fanboy comment) Guilty Gear is not well known because IMO, it wasnt published nor devloped by Capcom or another well known company. I was like that too at first, reluctant to play Guilty Gear, but once i started playing, i took the time to play it and after a while I thought Faust was the coolest thing ever (paper bag masks ftw). I been playing for 3 years ever since and still enjoying every second of it. ;)

I just found out I have a lot more arcades around where I live than I initially thought. I am definitely going to check them all out and see what they have.

That is how I was too. Very reluctant to play Guilty Gear, but now that I have played it...I wish I got into the series sooner...

Yeah I know it is not really an arcade. It was just one of the only places I know of around here that has arcade games.
Like I stated above...I found out there are more "real" arcades around my house than I thought. I am going to check them all out and see what 2D fighters they have.

@ Gunstar: Eh, Dave and Busters is a sore on the arcade world. Actually, GG is easier to get into than any Capcom or SNK fighter in my experience. Sure, commands are a bit tougher to execute because of HC+F motions but the game is far more lenient in timing and execution.
Oh, and the fact that you're avy is Gunstar Green (Gunstar Heroes!) is awesome.
