Anyone see anything worth mentioning.
Any controller that seems to have a decent d-pad?
I think the SFIV one looks kind of meh.

Hold up. I'll do some GOOGLING
the SFIV fightpad you mentioned is the only 360 controller made specifically for fighting games, that comes to mind...that said, I've heard a lot of stories of the controller not working properly, more specifically not accepting diagonal inputs at times.
Most people either modify the basic 360 stick, get the fightpad, or learn stick. Generally though most 360 fighter players are stick users.
yeah, you're better off just going with stick, it's just simply how fighters should be played.
here's another controller that's been proven to work (somewhat) well with fighters:

First, thank you all for the replies.
Second, Daishi, I looked at it, but the d-pad looks exactly the same as the standard 360 controller. I think I just may have to look into modding a standard controller until I really feel like buying a stick and re-learning. I'm super used to using a d-pad, the problem is that It's the PS2's d-pad that I play all the time.
I started a topic on this same subject a while ago....This one guy said you could get a ps3 controle- modify the input for the 360- and then use it as a 360 controle. It cost up to $40-80 to get the program that does this and it has to be shipped to you.(microsoft dosen't promote it...)
To me it is kind of dumb that the 360 has no genuine made controle for fighters. but i've learned to live with it.
Ps controles are ok to. The best ones for fighting but i would'nt mod my 360 just to play better. I just generally adapt to EVERY game i play through it's controle.

Well, I disagree with this, but whatever. I've learned that religion, politics, and control input for fighting games are three topics that are basically pointless to argue about since everybody has their own opinion and they're always convinced that their way is right no matter what, logic be damned.
I've personally had pretty good experiences with the SFIV Fightpad, but I have heard a lot of horror stories from people who have gotten defective controllers or had theirs stop working shortly after buying it. It seems like you gamble $40 whether or not you'll get a pad that works and I just happened to be one of the lucky ones. It may be a moot point though, since everybody has been sold out for months and MadCatz doesn't seem to have any intention of making more.
I was hoping for a new pad based on BB, but if they were making anything like that I think we probably would have heard something by now. I'm keeping my fingers crossed though.

Trevok as well.

it's just a fact...there's a reason why all major fighting game tournaments specifically use arcade sticks (Final Round, EVO, IC, TTF, Devastation, and MLG(eh))...I'm not saying you can't use controllers with fighters, I personally use them for certain games (SCIV/T5:DR), but there is no way the controller can be seen as being better than the arcade stick.

You're basing this assumption on the idea that everybody plays exactly the same way, though. For people who grew up playing games in the arcade and have used sticks since they first started playing games, then yes, sticks are better for those people because that's what they're used to. But for the crowd that has mainly played console games and has gotten used to using pads, sticks are more difficult to use and can actually handicap someone who isn't used to them. It all comes down to the individual and what they're more comfortable playing on. You can't say one is inherently better any more than you can say blue shirts are better than red shirts; different colors look better on different people. Just because YOU look good in blue doesn't mean all people who like to wear red are ugly.
As for tournaments, most of those are (or at least used to be) played using arcade machines, so sticks probably became the standard out of tradition more than anything. Last I heard you were still allowed to use control pads if you wanted to, you just see more sticks because the pro players spend a lot of time in arcades so sticks are the input method they're most comfortable with.
Edit: Dammit, and I promised myself I wasn't going to argue about this. :P LOL

no one is arguing here, you actually made a valid point.
If I had had an arcade around me that actually had fighters I would be using a stick. I grew up playing fighters on consoles, so I know what Royel is talking about. I'd rather have played in arcades, but what can you do other than re-learn how to play fighting games with a nice arcade stick? To me it's kind of like learning how to drive (controller) and then learning how to drive stick (stick, lol).

You're assuming that it's the only the standard because that's the way it has been for years, when in reality, it is also the standard because it is better. Joysticks have undeniable physical advantages over controllers when used for most fighting games. There are some where it doesn't matter so much (Soul Calibur) but for games like Guilty Gear, not using a joystick matters quite a bit.
If we are to compare apples to apples, such as someone who is comfortable with both a pad and a stick, his/her play on a stick will be better than that on a pad every. single. time. His/her execution will always be better on a stick, meaning better strategies due to more viable options being available at any given time.
Yes, someone who has never used a joystick seriously before will experience a learning curve of about one to three weeks before they should be able to match the level of play they had with a pad, but after that period of time, the player will ALWAYS be better than they were before, and will learn at an accelerated rate.
Hmmmmm.

Well GameKyuubi, unless you have scientific data to back up your claims or you happen to be an accredited expert in the field of ergonomics and/or applied engineering psychology, then I have to assume you're talking out of your ass. :)
Thanks for that impassioned sales pitch, sorry it wasn't convincing enough to make me fork over the $100+ entry fee to join the Church of the Almighty Stick.
