The title is self-explaining, there's a great Hakuoki title for the PS3 released not too long ago from Idea Factory, and I believe it'd fare better than Hakuoki PSP. There's also Hiiro no Kakera, from the Otomate series Idea Factory created. Why not any of those two titles?

I can't possibly being to point out the errors in your sentence, but each to their own opinions. PSP is a close-to-dead platform, and the PS3 finally picked up and it's on par with the 360. The PS2 sold more units last year than PSP. PSP UMDs are increasingly expensive, and the PSN can't possibly make the ends meet with a localized game (although not dubbing the game cut a huge part of the costs).
Record of Agarest War Zero, although I wouldn't like to use it as an example, it's the perfect example. How many copies did it sell on the first week? 60k PS3+360. I know it's a different genre, but even so, I don't think Hakuoki PSP will sell 60k during it's entire life, and trying to create big and shiny Limited Editions certainly won't help that.
Hmm... If the limited edition bonus is sword related, I'd buy it.
I do agree, the PSP has hit its stride. Don't see many places carrying PSP games, or UMD movies either (do they even make UMD movies anymore?)
The main way for me to pick this game up is directly buying it from Aksys.
As for the games on PS3 related to this topic... I can't say anything since I have no idea what kind of games they were.

I don't know if Hakuoki PS3 is a port from the PSP game or a different one, but it's from the same series, it wouldn't be a whole different game. Hiiro no Kakera, on the other hand, is a different game. I'm just asking this because PS3 is a living and kicking platform, while I can't say the same from the PSP.

I'm gonna say it has to do with the recent trend to release heavy story games on handhelds. RPGs and visual novels take a lot of time and reading, so it might appeal more to people if they can take it with them. Plus there's the fact you can save/pause wherever you are (depending on the game) and return to your work after clearing your head for a minute. While I love (and I do mean love) playing on my home console, people do not always have the luxury of time to throughly enjoy this kind of game attached to their tv.
If you only have enough resources to license/release one game (multi-systems would probably incur additional fees or an entire budget of their own), a handheld is the best bet. Why the psp was chosen over the ds, I don't know (maybe a difference in the localizing price or an unknown restriction from the original company). And frankly, I don't care what system it's released on while I get my otome goodness. I probably would find a used xbox if I had to, but then I love otome games. Luckily I have relatively easy access (can borrow if necessary) to nintendo/sony systems except for the newer handhelds.

I believe Sony had a "no visual novels allowed" rule in place for their systems in the US, since Americans would feel burned for picking up a pricey game and finding out they have to read or whatever.
The PSP is close to dead, so I guess Sony doesn't care what gets released on it anymore. The PS3 is doing much better, so they can keep their "standards" in place for it.
I also wonder more why the PSP was chosen over the DS. But only Aksys knows the answer to that...

Considering that the Vita is coming out soon, it might now be a bad idea. As with any new handheld, there will be a dearth of quality games on the Vita upon its release (actually, the Vita's launch seems to be shaping up to be relatively good, but still).
People are going to look to older titles for entertainment... and many people don't have PSPs. See where I'm going with this? What better time to release a PSP game than when PSVita owners will be starved for games?

Speaking of the PSVita... Has there been any talk about backwards compatibility? If it is, then it's far from a bad move. Any new release (digital) could be added to the library of the PSVita. If it is like that, then I'd be buying the digital versions of a few games I already have.

Actually they DO have a system in place to convert UMDs to Digital BUT... It's more like you scan the UMD on your PSP and get a ticket to buy a "used" digital copy. By that I mean you have to pay for it again, but less than the full price. Mind you the price of these "used" digital copies are set by the game makers. Thus you could have to pay $30 for the $40 game. :P

5 months ago, when I posted, we didn't know that.
Sometimes I get annoyed at GameFAQs for auto-archiving, then I go to forums like these and realize why they do it.

there is no such thing as a "used" digital copy, its only data, not like a disc that can be scratched to hell and traded into a used game store like Gamestop

This sums up my feelings on the subject. Visual novels and otome games are best on handheld consoles. All of it is reading and decision-making, occasionally some gameplay of a sort, and that's not something everyone has the time to sit in front of their tv to play. I've got both the PS3 and the PSP, but I would undoubtedly rather play a visual novel on the PSP. You can play it anywhere and in any position, not to mention the saving factor. Visual novels are essentially like books, and I would hate to read a book on my tv screen.

Hmm. I think having hand held visual novels are extremely convenient, and i'm already done 2 and a half character stories because its portable, but at the same time, it would be nice to see visual novels influence being spread around over many different kinds of systems. PC, handheld, PS3, Xbox, all of them would be great to have. I have no complaints about what system they're released for as long as I get to read them! And if they were on the PSN, i'd still buy them! I'm all for the release of visual novels, keep 'em coming! >D
