I can't find any reviews that actually explain much about the game in terms of how it is played. I see it is a 2D fighter, but the level system and the equipment/items confuses me. Do you level up in the game? Can you change equipment and items/use items?
Basically I want to know if it is just another fighter or is it really something that is worth $54.11
What is with this game?

The leveling up/down aspect only occurs in battle, and isn't permanent. You don't equip or use items either, but you can unlock different costumes.
In terms of gameplay, it is similar to Street Fighter 3. The GACHI system is akin to parries, where you can press the GACHI button to parry (with the correct timing), or you can press forward + the GACHI button to parry and immediately counter attack.
Another battle mechanic of Battle Fantasia is the Heat Up system. Press all four attack buttons to activate it (if you possess one MP bar), or you can hotkey it to a specific button. When it's activated, all your moves become stronger and some special moves change as well.
If you're a story fan, there is an in-depth story mode with over 12 hours of voiced dialogue and two paths/endings for each character.
There is a gallery mode of over 80 unlockable illustrations, training, survival, and time attack modes, not to mention a slew of achievements to unlock.
And playing against players from around the world using Xbox LIVE is definitely a huge draw too.
Hopefully this helps with your decision :)

I'll add some addendum's to Akselziys's post.
The level up and level down mechanic is unique only to the Watson character.
The speed and pacing of the game is very similar to the Street Fighter series, where zoning is more important, as opposed to the speed of the combo-heavy Guilty Gear series.
Battle Fantasia's gachi system is similar to Third Strike's parry system, but it functions more like Accent Core's slashback system. Parries are mapped to a button press, and failed attempts will put you into a recovery animation. Parries can be done on the ground, in the air, and even falling after you've been comboed.
The Heat Up system is similar to King of Fighter's when you eat stocks. Only difference here, is that each character's Heat Up is different. For instance, Koyori's Heat Up allows her to chain all her moves like a custom combo, Freed's gives him shadow images that also attack, and Odile's adds an additional hit to her specials and activates her double-jump.I judge you when you use poor grammar.Posted 3 years ago # -
Its like SF3rd Strike in terms of gameplay
Unique visuals and premise with it being modeled after an RPG style.
