Virtue's Last Reward... Hm. To be brutally honest, it doesn't exactly roll off the tongue. Then again, I know some people who still aren't sure about the order of 999: Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors. It's fine, it's not a game changer.
I just like "Good People Die" 'cause it feels so hard-hitting, like No More Heroes or Shadow of the Colossus. Titles that tell a story of their own. It just leaves a deep impression when it enters your head.
If I were to play around with it I would have come up with, "Last Redemption of Death", "Virtue's Final Glory" or "Crowning of Righteous Reckoning", something along those lines. Or maybe that's a little too... majestic for this type of game. Now I feel like I should be riding a chariot through a field of skeleton warriors :/
Virtue's Last Reward is an accurate translation of the games Japanese title though, "Good People Die" was also an accurate interpretation but it was just that, an interpretation that just happened to gain popularity. I much prefer an accurate translation of the title that keeps the meaning without having to resort to being "Flashy" just to grab attention. A Title SHOULDN'T have to be hard hitting just because people want it to be, a title should capture what the game is about and not how flashy people think it should be.
I mean "ICO" is a simple title and yet a very beloved game. The same goes for some favorites like the "Tales of" series or the Persona series and yet their titles don't really do much to grab attention. I don't have anything against Attention Grabbing titles, but I feel that a game shouldn't be forced to have one just because people think it SHOULD.
It helps to have one. Shadow is called Wander to Kyozo in Japan, or "Wander and the Colossus". It definitively fits the game and explains it to a tee, but gives it a completely different feel, wouldn't you say? Almost an ominous one.
I'm not really arguing against VLR. It already seems decided by Aksys, anyway. Personally, though, I would have went with an "attention-grabbing" name. A title is a sign of character, even if it's simple. That shouldn't matter in case since, though, since if you played 999 you'd certainly go after this game regardless of what it's called ;)
Quoting someone over on GFAQs.
For those who are not aware of this, the game title is actually a pun with double meanings: "zennin" means good person, "shibou" can mean either "die" or "want to be", and "desu" can mean either "death" or, well, nothing. So the whole title can mean either "Good people, Die! Die!" or "I want to be nice".
Same for "Virtue's Last Reward." The phrase "last reward" is a euphemism for "death" - or in this case, betrayal leading to death - but it can also be taken literally. That is, the "last reward" in question could be "betrayal and death," as per the obvious interpretation, or it could be a genuine reward. Again, both cynical and hopeful, although it's less a matter of "how you read it" and more "how much you read into it." ;)
Yeah, there's no double meaning to the phrase "Good People Die", amazingly. </obvious>
Also, if it helps, interesting first track title on the Japanese VLR OST :D

This is hands down the worst title ever! What were you guys thinking? 'Virtue's Last Reward'? No one is going to buy a game called 'Virtue's Last Reward' With the exceptions of fans, people are going to assume this one of those edutainment games that no one cares about.
Then again, just like supergamequeen said, I'm glad it's being released in English. It's just too bad the 3DS is region-locked. Hopefully, a European release date isn't too far off.
with that outlook who would buy a game with a dull name like super mario or sonic the hedgehog?
virtues last rewards sounds a heck of alot more interesting (and yeah I use popular game titles here that are overall boring games anyway(hey I hate mario n sonic get over it I'm an adv/rpg gamer)but there are good games with bad names out there and it hardly lowers popularity)
virtues last reward isn't that bad of a title and zero escape hints at the series its a part of
all that said with my understanding of who zero was and what the nonary game being replayed was for I don't see why there would be a second game as despite it being an awesome game it wrapped up most of the story well enough (I am curious about alice though after her being seen hitching a ride at the end of 999)
