Captured monsters can have some very powerful moves, but they all take up a bit more AP than for normal characters. To boost their AP, equip them with monster weapons, which you can get by trading in certain other captured monsters. Giving them armor and accessories also work, since they can use any accessory and don't need special ones just for monsters.
As for movement, you'll need accessories that boost you MOV. The only ones I can think of are the Feather Ring, Double Feather, and Triple Feather, giving you +1, +2, and +3 extra MOV, respectively.
For character's target areas (how far away they can select a target), that depends on their weapon. Knuckles in particular can have a very small target area. Unfortunately, that requires some experimenting, since some knuckles only give you a 2-square radius, or even just 1-square, and others give you a 3-, 4-, or even 5-square radius. Go into a battle with one weapon equipped to see if it gives you an adequate target area, and if not, switch to a different weapon. This might mean you have a slightly weaker weapon, but it's better to have long ranged weak hits than short ranged strong ones.
