Is there any way to clear the memory in jake hunter detective story memories of the past?
I bought the game from amazon's warehouse as an open box item
Apparently someone had played it and already unlocked most of the game.
While I did delete the old save, is there any way to totally clear out the memory so it is as good as new?

Sorry for the long wait...
Unfortunately, as far as I know, there is no way to "reset" the un-locked content.

I stumbled upon this forum searching for a way to get everything on JH back to the factory settings, and even emailed Aksys asking how to reset the game. They replied quickly with "Unfortunately the passwords will remain unlocked even if you restart the
game."I picked up a few used games from Gamefly (Jake Hunter, Time Hollow and Under the Knife 2), and they all suffered from this problem. None of them had a way to reset the game back to factory settings. I could live with it with JH and UtK2, but Time Hollow was really bugging me, as story elements are subsequent playthroughs are apparently slightly different.
That's where a product called Action Replay DSi comes into play. I bought one today. I had a theory that I might be able to backup a game save, then restore it to a different game, effectively forcing the cartridge to revert to factory settings.
It worked like a charm.
I was able to use Trauma Center 2 to restore Jake Hunter, Scribblenauts to restore Trauma Center 2, and Professor Layton and the Curious Village to restore Time Hollow (something to do with cartridge information being the wrong size). I then backed up the factory settings for each game so I can pass them onto someone else when I'm through.
On another note, the Action Replay DSi doubles as a new version of the old Games & Music cartridge. I was able to plug in the MicroSD card from my original G&M cartridge and immediately boot up those games, as well as play my homebrew stuff.

That's pretty awesome! I didn't know there was a product like that out there. When we're testing, we actually use something kind of similar. It corrupts the data on the card and kind of forces it to reset, but it's a dev tool you get from Nintendo, so I didn't think there was any point to mentioning it. Thanks for taking the time to post!
BTW, in light of this, as well as my earlier response, I'm going to mark this issue as "resolved".
