You have questions about BBCS. That's okay. We have answers. Below, you'll find a nice list of them. If you have more questions, please just respond to this post instead of creating a new thread. I'll update this first post with answers.
- Will DLC characters have theme music of their own?
- Will new DLC Characters come with new stages/stories/arcade modes?
- Will Valkenhayn be a character you can purchase via DLC?
- Basically anything about DLC characters. Just don't ask. It demeans us both.
- Why is the US release after the Japanese release?
Q: What is the release date for BlazBlue CS?
A: The official release date is July 27, 2010
Q: How much will the game cost?
A: MSRP is $39.99.
Q: What is the region coding on BlazBlue CS Xbox 360 / PS3?
A: The PS3 version is region free. You can play the US version of BBCS 360 on a US/Asian Xbox 360 which means it will not play in a European or Japanese Xbox 360. Sorry :( Additional note: The Japanese version will not run on a non-Japanese 360.
Q: Will there be a Limited Edition?
A: Short answer: No.
Long answer: We really did want to make a fantastical LE, but due to time constraints and production lead times, it just wasn't meant to be. Sure we could have slapped together some -your mother is a classy lady- branded merchandise and threw it in a box, but you guys deserve better than that. You’ll just have to live with buying the game for the paltry sum of $39.99.
Q: Will there be DLC characters?
A: Yes, indeedy! Makoto was just recently announced in this week’s Famitsu. Watch this space for updates to when she’ll be released and for future DLC characters. For you conspiracy theorists, Makoto is NOT on the BlazBlue: Continuum Shift disc nor are any of the future DLC characters, so you’re not just purchasing simple unlock code.
Q: What languages are in the game?
A: The US version will contain both English and Japanese voice overs. The Japanese version of BBCS will only have Japanese text and voices, except for battle call-outs, which will support English lines when playing against people playing the US version.
Q: What new stuff is in the game?
A: - 3 new modes (in addition to all the modes from Calamity Trigger), Challenge Mode, Tutorial, Legion (sort of it was in the PSP version of the game)
- 3 new characters for the home console version (Hazama, Tsubaki, Mu-12)
- All-new story mode, with English voice-overs and cinematics
- Nu is back as an unlimited character.
Q: Will the game run in native 1080p?
A: No. The art and sprites are created at 720p resolution.
Q: Will the game modes from Calamity Trigger be returning?
A: Yes. All of them.
Q: How will DLC character compatibility work?
A: On release day, an automatic patch will be released that adds Makoto to be played against, but not as (unless you buy the DLC, of course).
Q: How will the in-game unlockables be unlocked?
A: Just like in CT: by playing the game.
Q: Are Easy Specials still around?
A: Easy Specials are, technically, gone, replaced by "Beginner Mode". Beginner Mode is even simpler than Easy Specials--if such as thing can be. It's not that simple to explain, though, so that'll have to wait. This also means that the right thumb-stick is not essentially useless as anything other than a thumb-rest.
Q: Will Nu have a new story mode in CS?
A: No.
Q: What is the deal with Unlimited Lambda/Nu?
A: Unlimited Lambda is basically Lambda with Nu's moves, or Nu with Lambda's moves, depending on how you look at it, and is just called "Nu" on the select screen. She's also more powerful in general (has all the Unlimited properties.
Q: Will there be awards or unlocks for completing Challenges, Story Mode, or Arcade Mode?
A: Doing these things will unlock items in Gallery Mode (as well as achievements/trophies), and beating Story Mode unlocks Mu-12 as a playable character.
Q: Will all the Unlimited versions of every character (besides the DLC characters obviously) be available without purchasing them via DLC?
A: Yes, they can be unlocked through normal gameplay--by which I mean it's really, really hard. You can also buy them, if you suck too much.
Q: What, if any, changes have been made to the online component of Continuum Shift?
A: A "train while you wait" feature has been added, allowing the host of a room to practice their moves in Training Mode while they wait for other players to join, instead of just staring at an empty lobby. Hooray! A number of new game/find game filters have been added as well.
Q: Can the game be played full-screen (without letter-boxing) on a 4:3 display?
A: No. The game is created and designed to function in 16:9--forcing it to 4:3 would break the mechanics and many of the moves.
Q: Will the extra colors purchased for CT via XBL or PSN, carry over to CS?
A: No.
Q: Will Nu (aka Unlimited Lambda) retain her special battle voice against Ragna?
A: No.
Q: Will there be an option for alternate character announcer voices?
A: Yes, there will be a DLC pack available to add some new announcer voices. Carl, Jin, and Taokaka's Japanese voice actors provide these new voices. Each actor has two version--a Japanese one and an "English" one. There will be no alternate voice packs with the English voice actors.
Q: Who gets Astral Finishes and new Specials?
A: All characters from CT retain their Astral Finishes, although the inputs may have changed. New characters get Astral Finishes. All characters get new Specials.
Q: Are any old characters (characters from CT) getting new Astral Finishes/Heats?
A: No.
Q: Can you pit CPU characters against one another.
A: No.
Q: Will the Button Change option be available in online matches?
A: Yes.
Q: Will be tied to user accounts and limited in the way they are limited in CT?
A: Yes, the replay functionality is exactly the same as in CT. See this post for a few more details.
Q: Can you choose voice options (Japanese vs. English) on a per-character basis?
A: No, they are either all English, or all Japanese.
Q: Will there be paid DLC to unlock Mu-12, if you don't feel like completing story mode to unlock her?
A: Yes.
Q: How manage trials/challenges does each character have?
A: Each character has 10, but some have multiple parts.
Q: Will the re-balancing patch change damage scaling and heat gain? Or will it actually change move properties and the potential to complete certain combos?
A: Only Mori knows, and he isn't telling.
Q: Have the graphics been changed at all from the arcade version?
A: No.
Q: Will Mu-12 be playable in online, ranked matches?
A: Yes.
Q: In versus and online matches, after each person has picked their character, will Player 1 still be able to choose the theme and area for the battle like in CT?
A: Yes.
Q: Will Mu-12 be playable in online, ranked matches?
A: Yes.
Q: Will you still be required to lose in order to reach 100% completion?
A: You will need to lose to open certain paths, but you won't have to lose any battles where losing would take you to a Game Over screen. You will still see a few lines sometimes after loosing and going to a Game Over screen, but you aren't required to see these lines to get 100% completion.
Q: Will the console version have the arcade version's button layout switch (ABCD and DABC) option in addition to the manual button config option?
A: No.
Q: How long is story mode? Will it play the same way CT's did?
A: It does play the same way. Each individual character's story mode is about the same length as in CT, but there are now more characters.
Q: Will there be more episodes of "Teach Me Ms. Litchi"?
A: Yes.
Q: Will there be another True Ending for story mode?
A: Yes.
Q: Can I play music off my PS3 while playing the game (instead of the in-game music)?
A: No.
Q: Do Astral Heats and Unlimited characters still need to be unlocked?
A: Astral heats to not need to be unlocked, but Unlimited characters do. You can also buy unlock DLC for the Unlimited characters, if you don't feel like unlocked them in-game.
Q: Will there be more or less animated cut scenes than in CT?
A: You'll just have to wait and see. ;)
Q: Will there be downloadable colors/costumes during launch or the near future?
A: We are looking into that.
Q: Will the menus have different music?
A: Nope, same as CT.
Q: With some other more popular characters in BlazBlue in high fan demand, what made the developers decide to release Makoto as the first DLC character?
A: She was chosen for reasons of story relevance.
Q: How difficult is it to get the 100 Missions in Challenge Mode trophy/achievement?
A: If you don't know how to play fighting games, basically impossible. It should also offer a nice challenge, even for skilled BlazBlue players.
Q: Can Nu be recruited in Legion mode, even if she isn't unlocked/purchased?
A: Yes, but only in Legion Mode. To use her elsewhere, you have to buy/unlcock her.
Q: Will there be an option to use CT stages and CT versions of characters in CS?
A: Stages, yes, characters, no.
Q: Can you select "Restart Match" at the end of a Versus match?
A: No.
Q: Will there be a Legion Versus mode?
A: No.
Q: Will Jubei be available as a DLC character?
A: Only in my dreams.
Q: Will we be able to see Tao's face at any point in the game?
A: Only if your heart is pure.
Q: Will there be any way to get the BBCS soundtrack in North America?
A: We have no plans for that at this time.
Q: What will Tutorial Mode be like?
A: It is similar to the DVD, but more interactive--you are told about a mechanic, then test it out.
Q: Will the patch that allows Makoto and other DLC characters to be played against allow players to face them offline without paying for them?
A: No.
Q: What can you tell us about Makoto? Is her drive like Tsubaki's?
A: I can only tell you that she is a true lady, worthy of your respect, and that her drive is not like Tsubaki's.
Q: Are there any plans for patches beyond the one that's already been announced?
A: Not at this time.
Q: Will there be BB:CS themes/avatar/etc for PS3/360?
A: We are looking into this.
Q: What's the main difference between Tutorial Mode and Challenge Mode?
A: Tutorial Mode is for education, Challenge Mode is for people who need a challenge, and doesn't really "teach" you anything apart from combos.
Q: Does each character have their own tutorial, or do you have to use Ragna for all of them?
A: For the basic tutorial, yes, you do use Ragna for the entire thing, but there are individual, character-specific tutorials.
Q: Will the HD install eliminate "Now Loading" screens?
A: No, although it should make them shorter.
Q: How does CS deal with "ragequiting"?
A: Pretty much the same way that the (current) patched version of CT does.
Q: Will Makoto DLC be released in the US on the same day as in Japan?
A: We are cautiously optimistic that it will be.
Q: Is there an option to "retry" a lost battle in Story Mode?
A: Unless it's story-related, yes.
Q: How many stages will CS have?
A: There will be 29 in total, including old stages from CT.
Q: Is the "training stage" with grid lines available as an option in random stage select?
A: We're not sure.
Q: Will there be an in-game way to track wins/losses against specific players?
A: No.
Q: Would/will the game support custom soundtracks as DLC?
A: No, currently the architecture of the game wouldn't support that.
Q: Will Nu-13 be playable online?
A: Only is Player Match rooms where Unlimited Characters are enabled.
Q: I, [Internet Denizen], heard a rumor that Kokonoe's voice actor recorded alternate announcer lines for BBCS. Will these be available as DLC?
A: No.
Q: Have any of the voice actors been changed for CS?
A: No.
Q: Will Mu-12 get her own story mode once she has been unlocked.
A: No.
Q: Do your characters get stronger after fights in Legion Mode (ala Guilty Gear's Survival Mode)?
A: No.
Q: Will alternate voices play during online matches?
A: You should hear them, but your opponent will hear whatever their console is set to.
Q: Can DLC characters be blocked from online rooms?
A: After a fashion, yes. In Player Matches, the host creating the room can set the "System Version". If this is set to 1.00, that will block all DLC characters from that room.
Q: Will Mu-12 appear in Score Attack mode?
A: No.
Q: When fighting Unlimited Ragna and Unlimited Hazama in Score Attack, will they use their arcade moves, or their new Unlimited moves/traits?
A: They will use the new stuff.
Q: Will there be a demo?
A: No.
Q: Why is Makoto not on the disc as an unlock?
A: She was not finished when the game was.
Because of the way the submission process works, the game itself has to be finished significantly before the actual release date, while supplementary content--DLC, patches, etc--doesn't. This is the same reason many games have day-one patches--in order for the game to be released on time, the final, or "master", version of the game has to be submitted months prior to the released date. The company behind the game can continue developing things during this time which don't require the same submission/approval process. This is why although it appears as though the Makoto DLC and Continuum Shift were both "ready to go" at the same time, they weren't.
Q: My question is what will Makoto play like?
A: Short-range combat with a lot of tools. Not particularly fast, but hits hard.
Q: Will anything (trophies, unlocks, saves, etc) from the Japanese version carry over to the US version?
A: No.
Q: Will anything from Calamity Trigger carry over to Continuum Shift?
A: No.
Q: Will CS have a Gallery Mode?
A: Yes.
Q: Will Kotoko's new song be played in the background when someone uses their Astral Heat?
A: Yes.
Q: Will there be a version of BBCS for the PSP?
A: We're not sure.
Q: Will certain timing issues with voiced lines be fixed?
A: Due to the way the game is localized and produced, lines are often recorded before the in-game timings have been finalized. This means that some are cut off--usually during combos or similar things.
Q: Will DLC characters get tutorials in Tutorial Mode?
A: Yes.
Q: Will there be an option for color editing?
A: No.
Q: Will there be any way of fighting the DLC characters as offline opponents in any mode with the computer controlling them?
A: You can fight them in Versus or Training Mode, but they won't show up in Arcade, Legion, or Score Attack as opponents.
Q: Can the music that plays during Astral Finishes be turned off?
A: Yes.
Q: When playing Ranked Matches, will your percent be calculated the same way it is in Calamity Trigger, or will each character have their own ranked percent?
A: It will be the same as CT, with a main and sub.
Q: Which modes will DLC characters be playable in?
A: Score Attack, Online, Practice, Versus, Challenge, and Tutorial. You will not be able to play as the DLC characters in Story Mode or Arcade Mode.
Q: What is the reason for the July 27th release date (in other words, why is the US release after the Japanese release)?
A: The Japanese version does not have English text or voices (aside from battle shouts). Translating, localizing, and recording the English content requires additional time.
Q: Will there be any day 1 DLC?
A: Yes, Unlimited Character unlock DLC will be available day 1.
Q: Can the announcer voice be set to random (so that you get a different announcer, at random, for each match)?
A: No.
Alles andere ist käse.
