What manga and anime do you watch?
This thread's been quiet for a while...
Just a few weeks ago, the fan translation of Tokimemo Girls Side was completed, and fans also released a full translation of Starry Sky in Spring. Forum member Retro may be dismayed to hear that... but will hopefully be encouraged by the fact that people are writing and translating a variety of other games.

If the average Jane Doe were to pick up an otome VN that Akys licensed in her usual game shop/saw it on Amazon or wherever, what would appeal to her? If it were something that looked like a stereotypical dating sim, she would probably raise her eyebrows and think that it's a little bit trashy/pandering. But if she were to pick up a title with a bit more teeth that doesn't overtly pander to her, (like Danzai no Maria, for example) she may think that she might like to try it.
I don't know what average fans like. Some fans may enjoy cute stories similar to shoujo manga. Games about ordinary characters in an ordinary world may or may not sell well at Gamestop. It might be easier to sell content like this online.
That said, I imagine there are fans out there who like games/stories about suspense or adventure, and which aren't solely slice of life or love stories. The game that Retro mentioned, Exorcism of Maria, is a fairly bleak story, and there are a few similar VNs. And for those who are looking for complex games that include relationships as well as gameplay, there's titles such as Idea Factory's Wand of Fortune (PS2/PSP), which Gamertell recently reviewed, HuneX and Kadokawa Shoten's Real Rode (PS2/PSP), and Koei'sHarukanaru series, which has been on multiple platforms over the years.

Ouran High School Host Club has an otome game reference in the fourth episode. (There's also a licensed game based on Ouran Host Club available for PS2 and DS.) And I know there's at least one otome game reference in The World God Only Knows manga.
Aside from that, there's shows based on existing games, some of which have been professionally translated. Anime in this category include Harukanaru (Beyond the Stream of Time), Neo Abyss Angelique, La Corda d'Oro, and Hakuouki. Manga in this category include two of those four and Ugly Duckling's Love Revolution (based on Otometeki Love Revo).
Dang, I missed the survey. I'd be very interested in otome games though. I actually think they're a no-brainer to bring over. If there's one thing most teenage girls are interested in, it's romance. (I wasn't though. I was far too smart and mature to be into that sort of -your mother is a classy lady-. And now that I'm older, I like to re-live my lost youth through girly fluff like Rhapsody and Princess Debut. :-P)
Speaking of Princess Debut, it looks like the appeal wasn't limited just to teenagers... http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/945174-princess-debut/45848334
..or just females. http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/945174-princess-debut/45838720
Heh, my high school years were the same way. I liked video games, and the other gamers were all guys, so I ended up playing Counterstrike and Smash Bros. and eschewing all things girly. My friends weren't about to talk about hot guys and romance, no matter how much I liked a good love story.
It wasn't until many years later that I realized playing a few girly games didn't make me less of a hardcore gamer. I played the hell out of Princess Debut and Style Savvy, because they were both fun games instead of "here's some horsies, enjoy this because you're a girl". I can like girly stuff and romance because it's part of who I am, not because it's what expected of me.
I think that if they found an otome game or games which not only had the otome element of choice for a possible love interest otome games could do well state side. For example in general I love a good RPG such as The World Ends With You or Golden Sun Dark Dawn. So if an RPG with a great story could also have some romance elements I would find that fun. For example I thought Avalon Code was cute and it had a romance element and I also think Harvesr Moon is cute too. I don't think with the possible exception of Starry Sky with it's cute characters but sometimes downright sexist remarks and useless MC that otome games are any worse then the games in the U.S. that already exist as "girl games" with princesses dressing up and dancing and things of that nature. I for one would rather be Neku fighting for his life in most cases.
I wonder if Rockin' Pretty sold well.
I'm a boy and I'd get an otome game probably just if it has an art style I like.

I agree. I like games with fun gameplay and epic stories, and a romance element on top of that would be awesome. A lot of games already do this, however they only have the option to play a guy (Ar Tonelico for example) which means I'm out of luck. Games like Soul Nomad, Avalon Code, and Summon Night: Swordcraft Story, include a gender choice and romances for both genders. However I don't know how many of those kinds of games there are that haven't been localized (Blue Roses and Fate/Extra are the only ones I think), and there are tons of Otome Games that are unlocalized.
Persona 3 and 4 also have dating elements.
It's a bit surprising how western RPGs have much more romance than JRPGs. The Bioware games have increasingly sophisticated systems for romancing your party members, and the romances are ridiculously popular. Every love interest has their own fan clubs and threads with thousands of posts if you look at the Bioware Social Network.
The best game romance I've ever experienced was with a fan-made mod for Baldur's Gate. So good!

I can’t believe I forgot Persona! They’re great games, and now that P3P’s included a FeMC, I hope P5 will offer the choice as well.
I agree that Bioware's games are very awesome, and in every single one of them they've offered the choice to play as a female which has gotten them a ton of loyal fans, myself included. However I think that this is more indicative of Bioware than of WRPGs in general.
For example, part of the reason that the character threads on the Mass Effect Forums are so large (other than the fact that they're all really great characters and people like to talk about them) is because of what happened between ME 1 and 2. People realized that Bioware actually read the forums, and took their views into consideration, and therefore threads were created in order to advocate for the inclusion of popular characters as romantic interests. The largest were probably the ones for Garrus and Tali, who were fan-favourites from ME 1, and became love interests in the second as a result of feedback gathered from the forums. People like to get involved in things if they have a say in what might happen.
Also, Bioware has a dedicated fanbase now, who know that they generally include the option for romance, so it’s both expected and discussed on the forums.
However, which other WRPGs have deep romantic elements which offer you choices rather than just having it written into the story? The Witcher has sexual encounters, but I wouldn’t really call those romances. Fable lets you marry NPCs, but they’re so shallow and the process is so easy that you might not have bothered. Compared to that, what Bioware’s doing is unique, and much closer to something like Persona than Fable.

Well, Obsidian's Neverwinter Nights 2 had romance options. From the developer interviews it seems that The Witcher 2 is also going to have actual romances this time, although I'm not sure if they could get Geraldt committed to a single woman since the games are based on an ongoing book series. Other than that, I don't think there really are any modern WRPGs that have the kind of NPC interactions that lend themselves to romance. I have the feeling that if anyone would now publish a party-based non-action WRPG, they'd have some pressure to include romance.

Would Dragon Age count? You can talk to your party members as much or as little as you want and give them gifts to increase their favor with you. As far as I know you can even have male-female, female-female, and male-male relationships. It's still an RPG, but the choices you make can alter how your party members feel. Dialog and interactions change accordingly. (though now that I think about it, that's a Bioware game lol)

That doesn't really count, since the original NWN was a Bioware game.

Yeah. Now that Bioware's so popular, I'm pretty sure we'll eventually see other games that re-use their formula, romances and all. We've already got Faery: Legends of Avalon, which is very much like a smaller, less polished Bioware RPG, and it's not half bad.

God dammit. Apparently they're only considering bringing over even more male-oriented dating games. This is really unfair. There's already a ton of translated bishoujo games. Hell, JAST is a whole company dedicated to localizing them! Otome games on the other hand never get localized. There's only one or two that have ever made it over here.

Well JAST only localizes PC eroges... As far as I know all or most of them have H-content. What we want is the ones for consoles WITHOUT said contents. But I do understand it being unfair that there are very few Otome games being localized.
Have you guys heard of Shira Oka?
http://www.shira-oka.com/
It's a ren'ai, but when the creator spoke at a panel I attended mentioned he was inspired by the Konami otome games, specifically the Tokimeki Memorial series. He also mentioned that if this game was a success he'd want to create the next game where the gender roles are flipped.
Just keep in mind that I think Shira Oka took at least a couple years to create. It was practically created by a team of less than 5 people...
Speaking of Konami, has there been any headway about them and their games getting released outside Japan?
I would like to see more visual novels and otome games localized though. I would loooove to see the Tokimeki Memorial Girl's Side series come over to America. Love Plus would be nice too.

Ditto for that. If they'd release any Tokimemo, I'd buy it.
In a couple of months it's been a year since Aksys made the Otome poll, and we still haven't heard any news or announcements. Not a good sign. :-(

They've been pretty blunt in saying wait for Anime Expo for the announcement. Which starts today and ends on the 4th of July.
Aksys has their panel at 11:15 AM tomorrow.
