I once bought an anime similar to that. Turned out to be a bootleg that had translations worse than an auto-translator. Honestly, it was hard to legitimately call it a "translation."

TiddleatingWell, the Umineko anime was never licensed or localized in English, so that's not an official American release whatsoever. Furthermore, the artwork on the back of the box is clearly put together from fan-art that is unrelated to the anime. The front cover too, I think. The description of the show on the back of the box is also clearly not something that would really be on the back of the box and sounds more like someone trying to describe the set-up of the show to their friend. And, last but not least, checking the product information shows that this is a Malaysian product that was approved by the "Malaysian Censorship Board".
I'm sorry to break this to you, but Malaysian anime DVDs are notorious for having poorly done and inaccurate subs. It's often translated through multiple languages (Japanese into Malay into Chinese into English), so the sentences wind up beyond awkward and lose a lot of meaning. Umineko in particular is the kind of show where you can't afford to lose any meaning in your subs. I'd tell you that you were better off waiting for the American release, but I highly doubt this show will get licensed for America considering it was left half-finished.
But Studio DEEN adaptations suck anyway, and the Umineko anime is no exception. Just stick with the visual novels, I say.

well i got the set today and it seems pretty correct on translation minus occasional name mistakes (Krauss is Klauss sometimes and kinzo is kinzou sometimes too) but the first 2 episodes seem workable enough i probably wont ever buy this stuff again i was just hoping for a copy of umineko subs that would look better on my big screen tv instead of a small window on my laptop >_< o well it was only $20 not that i couldnt have used that $20 lol

TiddleatingWell, if they are watchable for you, then that's good, at least. Personally, I would probably only spend money on the Umineko anime if it was an official english release. I wouldn't even watch it again, since it wasn't very good, but I'd support it for the sake of maybe the sales eventually leading to a release of the PS3 ver of the VN.

MemberSaw Umineko being referenced in another work for the first time. Just got the first Durarara!! volume, and it mentions the Ushiromiya family after Mikado mentions his full name to Walker and Erika, with them comparing Mikado's and the Ushiromiyas' names.
It even mentions the one winged eagle.
