games don't rot in between saves.

Yes they do! Wait too long, and you'll prefer to start from the beginning than continue from the savepoint.

If an RPG is too long to you, then something is wrong with the story's pace or the game's mechanics. (Such as battles.)
I always found that the best RPGs are the long RPGs that seem short. Where literally time passes me by and what I assume is like 15-25 hours is really 50-75 hours.
Dragon Quest VIII
Persona 3
Super Robot Tasien OGThose are 3 examples that are long RPGs but because they are so fun that I don't even realize what time it is. XD
Of course there are great RPGs that feels the amount that you actually played too.
Xenogears
Final Fantasy X
Star Ocean: Till the End of TimeThose 3 examples felt exactly as I played them.
Then there are those that are just too long no matter if its 10 hours or 70 hours because something isn't right about them...>_>
Magna Carta: Tears of Blood
Last RebellionOf course not saying those RPGs are bad or anything. They just felt like...I am wasting more time then I should.

I'll admit that I loved Persona 3 to the point that it's my favorite game on the PS2. But it was a bit too long. Persona 4 fixed that by being shorter, but it was still long as far as RPGs go.
Still, I had to take breaks from Persona. I couldn't play it straight through, I had to put it on hiatus about 3 or 4 times, and it took me just under half a year to finally finish it. With a backlog of around 70 or so games, sometimes I just want to have fun for a little while and then move on.

that's one's memory, not the gameThe analogy still holds, though. Your memory of a game can still "rot" in the way food rots, metaphorically.

Pfft, I like my jrpgs long. If I wanted something short I'd buy a game from a different genre.
Completely unrelated but, I wish the guy who came up with Katamari Damacy would start making games again.
