It’s a delightful surprise. After all, Family Fishing is an all-ages, eShop exclusive for the Nintendo 3DS. You don’t expect too much from something that only costs $5.99, but this fun for everyone endeavor lays things out in a rather brilliant manner.

“Overall, this game is simple, but that’s not a bad thing. It’s clearly being meant for a younger audience, and it does that well. The actual fishing mechanics can sometimes be a bit odd, but after a bit of practice it becomes quite fun. The game is great for quick bouts of playing, with very clearly defined bursts of gameplay that end quickly enough for things like a bus ride or sitting in a waiting room. It’s a very fun game with some silly little quirks and a very family friendly aesthetic.

Family Fishing isn’t the prettiest fish in the sea, but it sure is fun. With battle-based fishing that feels like nothing else and a friendly, arcadey style, this is quick-fire fun that’s great to dip into for a few quick casts. A conspicuous lack of multiplayer and a few presentation issues put some slack in the line, but if you’re an avid angler looking to reel in something different, Family Fishing is a catch.

“Although I am not a fan of these types of games thinking from an objective viewpoint the game does have a certain charm and it is a rather silly yet fun game. Sadly, the game is too short for it to have much replay value and it can get boring to try to play through more than one campaign in a single day. This is one of those games that is best played a little at a time rather than all in one day which I’m sure can easily be done by many of those who play it. The music and scenery in the game also gets a little old if you play it for a few hours at a time since there isn’t much variety even though the little bit of music the game has is catchy and full of energy. I recommend this game to those who like taking their time and playing a game a little at a time as this game has more replay value that way.”
